The person described, by Jesus, in today’s gospel story made the wrong decision in response to the question what was he to do with the produce of a bountiful harvest. Jesus describes such a person as a fool for deciding to hoard his riches, taking things easy, eating, drinking, and having a good time. Of course the correct decision would have been to share his God given good fortune with those who are less well off, thereby making himself rich in the sight of God. But how many of us would have made that decision? The Old Testament readings from Ecclesiastes and the Psalms confirm the futility of placing undue emphasis on earthly endeavour and prosperity: as life on earth is so short, relative to eternity.
“Oh that today you would listen to his voice” God has a habit of speaking to us in the voices we hear every day.
The work of demolition of St Mary’s Hall is now complete, and foundation work will commence after the end of the builders’ holiday period. The main contractors for the construction are Townmore Construction Ltd, a Tullamore based firm, who have a number of projects in hand throughout the town. The final contract price is €1,973882.75. The plan is to have a new centre completed by the end of April 08. We will give an update on work as it progresses, not necessarily on a weekly basis, but as often as seems appropriate.
One of the first lessons we learn as children is to learn how to say thanks. It is something that we lookout for. In a shop if the person behind the till does not say thank you we notice, and like wise if we are rude and ungrateful out doing our business, it is noticed. A thank you can be worth more that any present. God deserves our thanks, and most of the time we forget. Like spoiled children we ask and ask, receive and then walk away. A prayer of thanks giving adds nothing to the greatness of God. His goodness does not depend on our feelings, but our desire to thank him is itself a gift from God. Ask and receive, receive and be thankful. God is great, tell him now and again.
