THE TRANSFIGURATION The second Sunday of Lent is always devoted to the mystery of the Transfiguration. The account of this event in today’s Gospel is familiar to us. Jesus takes Peter, James and John up a high mountain where they could be alone. While there, Moses and Elijah, who symbolise the Law and the Prophets, are seen to be in conversation with Jesus. The disciples witness this and another wonderful, but more frightening sight. Jesus is transfigured before them. That is, Jesus underwent a dramatic change in appearance. His personal appearance was changed into a glorified form, and his clothing became “dazzling white”. The disciples see all of this. The purpose of the transfiguration of Christ into a glorified form was to allow his three disciples a greater insight and understanding of who he was. We know from Peter’s reaction and offer to make three tents that they did not then quite grasp the significance of the event. They saw Jesus as having something like the status of Moses and Elijah. They had not quite realised the deity of Christ, although they were edging towards this understanding. Then a voice from the cloud saying, “This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to Him”. Only Jesus remained. Moses and Elijah were gone. The Law and the Prophets had given way to Jesus. The message could not have been more direct and clear. We must now listen to Jesus. What does it mean to listen to Jesus? Are you listening? LENT 2024 WEEKDAY MASSES 7.45am, 10.00am & 7.30pm. WEEKDAY STATIONS OF THE CROSS before 10am Mass. EVENING PRAYER Sundays 5.30pm in Tullamore Church LIVING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL Mk 9:2-10 Some special spiritual experiences are well nigh impossible to describe in words. The Transfiguration was one of these. Jesus had a new and deeper insight into his relationship with his heavenly Father, one that would sustain him through what lay ahead of him. Have you had WOW moments that you found hard to describe to others? How have these sustained you in difficult times? It can be both scary and wonderful to witness transformation in another, especially a person who is close. At times parents get a taste of this when a child’s talent blossoms and is recognised by the child. We may also experience it when a dear friend recognises s/he is in a blind alley and gives up an addiction. ‘This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him.’ Peter, James and John were particularly close to Jesus, but they were not good at listening to Jesus, especially when he spoke of the painful road of servant discipleship. Jesus is the one we must listen to, even when his message is hard to hear. It is in this message we find life. When have you found this to be true? Strangely this instruction came to the disciples when they were confused and ‘in a cloud’. Perhaps you recall a moment of insight coming to you at a time when you were confused. - John Byrne osa, Intercom Feb 2024 PRAYING ST MATTHEW’S GOSPEL Bible Course on Christ our King and on His Kingdom; studying & praying on the 1st, 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of every month, 7.30pm.
