GAUDETE - REJOICE

Today is Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent.  The birth of the Saviour is drawing near and we should rejoice.  The Entrance Antiphon is “Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say rejoice!  The Lord is near”.  This theme of rejoicing can be seen also in the first reading of Isaiah, “they will come to Zion shouting for joy, everlasting joy on their faces; joy and gladness will go with them and sorrow and lament ended.

St. James urges us to be patient and not to lose heart, because the Lord’s coming will be soon.  This is what we must concentrate our minds on at this time of year.  We are surrounded by all sorts of worldly difficulties - unemployment, poverty, lawlessness, insecurity, wars and threats of war.  We might feel like John the Baptist in his prison cell and doubt if Jesus is the one, and, at times even lose faith.

But we must trust in the harvest.  Christmas is coming.  It is a time of joy for those who believe.  Let us follow the example of our children and rejoice with all our heart.

ADVENT INVITATION!

BLESSING OF CHILD JESUS STATUES

Next Sunday, 18th, we invite children to bring the baby Jesus statue from their crib to Mass.  At the end of all Masses, the children will be invited to come forward and have the statue blessed and they will then be ready to put into the crib at home on Christmas Day.

Nightfever will take place next Sunday afternoon, 18th, commencing at 3.00pm and concluding with Evening Prayer at 5.30pm.  During this time there will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and volunteers will be in town inviting people to come and light a candle and pray a while.
