ADVENT- COMING NEAR

Today, the season of Advent begins.  It is the start of a new Church year and a season of waiting for something that is coming near.  Do we know what is coming near?  For some time now advertisements have appeared in our newspapers, on radio and on TV to remind us of what is coming near.  We are urged to book our office party, to plan and prepare for our festivities, to buy our presents in good time, to write early to Santa, and even to arrange holidays abroad to escape from Christmas.  Is that what is coming near?  Is that what we are waiting for?  Is it all about an annual “big bang” of commercialism and consumerism?  For some, it may very well be just that.  But, for Christmas, it doesn’t have to be that.

Today’s readings help us to focus on the real meaning of Advent and Christmas.  There is talk of going up to “the mountain of the Lord”, of loving “decently as people do in the daytime”, and of letting our “armour be the Lord Jesus Christ.”  The Gospel advises us to “stay awake, because you do not know the day when your master is coming.”

Advent means “the coming near.”  We are faced with the coming near of salvation.  For us, Christ is not simply a person out of the past.  He is the Lord, who returns today.  “Christ has died.  Christ is risen.  Christ will come again”- in glory at the end of time.  Are you preparing for Him?  Will you be ready when He comes?

EVENING PRAYER FOR ADVENT

Evening Prayer for Advent starts this evening, Sunday 27th, at 5.30pm.  It will continue on Sunday 4th & Sunday 18th Dec (please note, not on Sunday 11th).

CHRISTMAS CAROL SERVICE

A Christmas Carol Service will take place on Sunday 11th Dec at 7.00pm in the Church of the Assumption.  It will feature the Meath Diocesan Choir (Director Jim Walsh) along with local choirs from Durrow NS, Ballinamere NS, Sacred Heart School and Children’s Mass Group.

Admission is free but there will be collection boxes available for voluntary contributions to go to nominated charities for Christmas.

ADVENT INVITATION!

PRAY AND MEDITATE WITH US

We want to be closer to you this Advent season.

Every week, during the four weeks of preparation for  the feast of the Nativity of the Lord, we will post on our Youtube channel (Tullamore Parish) a short video (15 minutes), which will contain some prayers, a short reflection and some discussions about the Mass Readings.

We hope it will be of great spiritual benefit to you!

The holy readings that we will read, meditate on and discuss, can be found in the Magnificat.  If you would like a copy of the Magnificat, please contact the Parish Centre.

God bless you and keep you!
