NO SHORTCUTS
The call and the cost of Christian commitment are emphasized in this week’s gospel. Jesus didn’t take a short cut but took the road through Samaria, even though the Samaritans and the Jews were deadly enemies. The cost of being a disciple of Jesus has a price and it can be a lonely road to follow. As Jesus walks that road he found that not everyone supported his journey. On his journey he meets three who are anxious to follow him but who are unfit or unprepared for the challenge involved. The one bursting with enthusiasm was rejected when Jesus pointed out that he didn’t have a home to call his own. He lets another know that the cost of being a disciple as a price – leaving his parents. To follow Jesus to Calvary can be no casual accompaniment of a wandering preacher – if anything stands in our way or takes priority over Jesus in our lives, then we are not free to follow him. Every day we are faced with making choices. When Jesus calls we have to make daily choices which are not always easy to make. Our journey with Christ begins at Baptism with a promise to make his way of life our own. The Lord’s call demands an immediate response, not just something to be fitted in after we have attended to all the important business in our lives, as we see it. “I will follow you wherever you go.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY It always protects, always trusts, Always hopes, always perseveres. LOVE NEVER FAILS. 1 Cor 13:4,7-8
SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL Luke 9:51-62 In the opening verse Jesus is portrayed as having a new sense of clarity about his life that enables him to set out on the road ‘resolutely’. Perhaps there have been such moments in your life, moments of insight and clarity about the road ahead. Recall such moments and what they were like for you. As he walked the road Jesus met with opposition. This angered some of his friends and they wanted to hit back. Jesus restrained them, and would not let himself be distracted from the journey he was making. What helps you keep your goals in mind when minor annoyances distract you? The response of Jesus to prospective followers seems harsh. He lets the first man know that discipleship is not a path to a comfortable nest. It is a way in which we never know what is going to be asked of us next. The disciple must be ready to move on. Where have you found good news in being open to change, confident in the presence of Jesus with you? Jesus also demands commitment. It is easy for us to think about times when our commitment was less than perfect. But can you also recall the times when you realised the truth of this story – that commitment brings its own fruits and blessings. What specific blessings can you bring to mind?
