CORPUS CHRISTI

The Gospel reading is very brief.  It tells us of the wonderful miracle performed by Jesus when he multiplied the loaves and fish to fee thousands in a lonely place outside the town of Bethsaida.  The crowd had followed him there, hungry to hear him speak about the Kingdom of God and anxious to be healed of their ailments.  The day was drawing to a close and the disciples took the initiative concerning the crowd, by now physically hungry, suggesting that Jesus should send them away to find their own food and lodgings.  But Jesus said to them, “give them, “give the some food ourselves”, highlighting the apostles’ future responsibility in caring for Christian communities.

Then, in a sequence of actions foreshadowing the institution of the Eucharist – looking up to heaven, blessing the food and breaking it – he provided for the crowd.  The apostles played a very definite part in this event.  They gave the food to the crowd.  This was their work and mission – to nourish the people.  And it is still the work and mission of their successors today, to feed the people the Body and Blood of Christ.  In today’s world, they must continue to talk about the Kingdom of God, cure those in need of spiritual healing, and nourish the people with the Body and Blood of Christ.

PARISH SCHOOL

Reminder:  Registration for religion classes in the Parish Centre for those preparing for the Sacraments, will close on Friday 24th June

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

“If there is hunger anywhere in the world, then our celebration of the Eucharist is
somehow incomplete everywhere in the world…  We cannot properly receive the Bread
of Life unless at the same time we give the bread of life to those in need,
wherever and whoever they may be”.

Pedro Arrupe SJ

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL Luke 9:11-17

Jesus welcomes the crowd, taught them, and cured those in need of healing.  Bring to mind the ways in which the story of Jesus and his message have brought you enlightenment, and healing.

Today we are invited to walk in the footsteps of Jesus by welcoming people affected by Covid, displaced by war, or struggling to make ends meet. Perhaps in the face of these difficulties you feel helpless.  So did this disciples and yet Jesus said to them ‘You give them something to eat’.  They thought what they had was insufficient but Jesus used the little they had to feed the crowd.   Have you ever found that when you give the little you have to a situation, the results were beyond your expectations?

The miracle is symbolic of the abundance of blessings coming to us from God through Jesus.  How has your faith in Jesus been a source of nourishment to you?  What blessings have you received through your faith?
