CONFESSIONS Saturday 2.00-3.00pm in the Day Chapel. THE BIRTH OF THE CHURCH This weekend, we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, the birth of the Church of which we are all a part. The Gospel reading tells us that the disciples were in a room with the doors firmly closed, for fear of the Jews, when Jesus came among them. The disciples were hiding, keeping a low profile and definitely not displaying openly that they were followers of Jesus. Some of you may remember the Latin inscription that was above the altar in Tullabeg Jesuit Church. It read “Ignem Veni Mittere in Terram”, which translates as, “I come to put a fire in the world”. And that is what happened on this day of Pentecost. Jesus came to the disciples and gave them His Spirit, The Holy Spirit. He put fire in them. Their faith was ignited and set alight. The lack of conviction in these cowardly men was burned away. They could not wait to go forth and spread the good news of salvation. We too have received the Gift of the Holy Spirit at our Confirmation. We too, the Church of Christ, have received the seven gifts that the Spirit brings. Are we transformed and ready to show openly our belief in the good news of salvation? Are we ready to go forth in our world?

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL John 14:15-16, 23-26 ‘If you love me you will keep my commandments’ and specifically the commandments to love one another (cf. 13.34). How have you experienced the link between love of God and love of those around you? To His followers Jesus promises ‘we will come and make our home with them’. Our God is not a distant God but one who lives in us. What has helped you to be aware of the closeness of God to you? Jesus is preparing his disciples for his imminent departure and for a future in which he would be with them in a different way. He would not ‘leave them orphans’ but send an ‘Advocate’ to ‘be with (them) for ever’. How have you experienced the presence of God with you in your life? Jesus seeks to reassure his followers in the face of his imminent death. Although he will be leaving them he promises them the gift of the Spirit. How have you been aware of the gift of the Spirit of God in your life?
