SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL MATTHEW 22:1-14

Scripture often speaks of the Kingdom of God as a banquet.  The image of people being at a meal where everyone is happy and welcome and where all hunger and thirst is satisfied gets across the idea that God loves, accepts and welcomes us and wants us to make that experience available to one another.  Think of times in your life when you have had ‘banquet’ experiences and when you felt accepted and loved?  The host enlists the help of his servants to invite people to the banquet.  We are commissioned by the Lord to invite people to the banquet of the Kingdom, to the fullness of life – as parents, teachers, friends, etc.  What has it been like for you to play a part in leading others to a fuller life?

As in the parable last week there is a message about being alert to invitations that offer a fuller life and the danger of losing out if we neglect to respond to such invitations.  Perhaps there have been opportunities offered to you that you missed, and now regret.  Think also of the blessings you received because you seized the moment and took an opportunity that presented itself.  The second parable puts the focus on how we respond to invitations.  Some invitations are ones that challenge us to change, to conversion, to put on a ‘wedding garment’.  What has been your experience of changing in response to an invitation you received? MISSION SUNDAY, 18 OCTOBER

In basic terms, World Mission Sunday is the Holy Father’s annual direct appeal for spiritual and financial support so that the life-giving work of missionaries can continue. It always falls over the second last weekend in October, and similar to the Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land and Peter’s Pence, it is one of three yearly Universal Church collections. Since its announcement as a papal collection, all parishes worldwide have offered Mass collections from the day to aid the work of missionaries and mission overseas.

Many are surprised to know that World Mission Sunday collections take place in every single parish where the Church is present. This includes not only Ireland and across Europe, but also in poorer parishes in the developing world. World Mission Sunday is a moment of universal solidarity, when each member of the Church family, regardless of location or background, can play their part in supporting each other. This is why it is such a special and vital celebration. On Mission Sunday there will be an opportunity at the end of Mass for anyone who wishes to contribute to this appeal.

PARISH CEMETERIES

Due to covid restrictions it was not possible to have our cemetery Masses this year. The priests of the parish have visited the cemeteries and blessed the graves and Mass has been offered for all who are interred, may they rest in peace.

The ongoing maintenance and upkeep of our cemeteries continues. In past years parishioners have supported this work through the collections taken up at cemetery devotions. This year there is a great loss at not being able to have these collections. In an effort to address this we have prepared special donation envelopes which are available in our Churches for the support of Clonminch and Durrow cemeteries. Your support for this work is greatly appreciated.
