CEMETERY Sunday in Tullamore will form a central part of a special Gathering' event in Offaly this year. The Tullamore Parish Gathering on the weekend of August 17-18 next has received €4,000 worth of State funding as part of a nationwide initiative to entice visitors to Ireland. The Parish Gathering is one of three 'flagship' events which will take place in Offaly under the 'Gathering' banner in 2013. A grant of €4,000 has also been given to the organisers of the St Patrick's Weekend Festival in Tullamore, an event taking place to coincide with St Patrick's Day. The biggest flagship event and the one which has been awarded the biggest grant - €10,000 - is Birr Vintage Week, which will take place in August. A new festival idea, the Rhode Parish Gathering, pencilled in for May, which will incorporate the Croghan Hill Challenge, has been granted €7,000. Fr Shane Crombie, curate in Tullamore, said this week that the parish was delighted to get the grant and said the money will be spent promoting the weekend of Cemetery Sunday. 'It's going to be a very big weekend and will be coming after the Tullamore Show. We will be promoting it and part of it is to get people in,' said Fr Crombie. Plans are still being made for the weekend but there will probably be two social events, one on Saturday, August 17, the eve of Cemetery Sunday, and another after the ceremony at Clonminch cemetery. 'The Church is part of society and we have to do our bit for the economy as well. If we can encourage people to come and that is a boost to the economy and the country that is a good thing,' said Fr Crombie. In addition to the flagship events in Birr, Rhode and Tullamore, 37 other  events are also on the official Offaly ( Gathering 2013 calendar and they have received various amounts of grant aid ranging from €500 up to €1,750. The €55,000 allocated to 40 events in Offaly is part of a €2 million national Gathering Ireland Fund, sponsored to the tune of €1 million by IPB, an insurance company for local authorities. Cllr Peter Ormond, chairman of Offaly County Council and chair of a steering group which has been planning the Gathering, said on Monday that he was optimistic about the event this year.

Update 17th May 2013

Our Parish has committed itself to participating in the Gathering 2013 here in Tullamore.  Our Gathering events will be held over the weekend of August 17th/18th, which is the weekend of our annual Cemetery Devotions.  On Saturday evening we will hold a Street Party after Vigil Mass, most likely at St. Brigid’s Place.  On Sunday 18th August we will hold a Garden Fete in Colaiste Choilm after Mass in the Cemetery at 1.00pm.   A Committee is already at work planning the events, and will welcome volunteers to help in the organisation of the two events. If you are willing to help in any way, please give your name to any member of the Parish Team, or at Reception in the Parish Centre.
Your most important role however, is to let your relatives and friends know that these events are being organised.  They can obtain information on the website www.tullamoreparish.ie , and we will work very hard to make them most welcome on the weekend.  We have been allocated a small amount of funding through Offaly Co. Council to organize the Gathering, so it is up to us to make good use of these funds, and make our weekend a great success.
