GLORY BE TO THE FATHER, THE SON AND THE HOLY SPIRIT Today we celebrate the Blessed Trinity. The shamrock we wear on St Patrick’s Day represents the Trinity. The stem represents one God; the three leaves represent the three persons in God. While each has a special mission there is perfect harmony and unity between them. The Father who is perfect love, is the fountain and source of the Son and the Spirit. The Son is the total self-giving of the Father. The Spirit is the bond of love between Father and Son. Each time we bless ourselves or say ‘glory be to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit’ we name each of the persons of the Trinity. This week we could try to think more about these two short prayers. Let us also take quiet moments to pray: ‘I bow before the Father who created me; I bow before the Son who saved me; I bow before the Spirit who guides me.’ Conscious of being immersed in God, quietly praise and worship God; the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
A kind deed done in time of need though small, is of more value than the world itself. - Thirukural
FIRST COMMUNIONCongratulations to the children from Scoil Mhuire who receive the Eucharist for the first time today. We wish God’s blessing on them, their families, friends and teachers and all who helped them on their faith journey to this special time. PARISH WEBSITE COMMENT
‘Well done. Hi, I happened to be at 10.00am Mass last Sunday, 11th. It was a first Communion Mass and I just want to say well done to the celebrant, who gave a lovely sermon and was at ease with the young children. The children and teachers from St Joseph’s NS are a credit to the school. The Mass was beautifully organised and simple. Well done to all.’ Guest to website 12/5/08. CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSIONThe Corpus Christi Procession takes place next Sunday, 25th, at 5.00pm. The route is as follows:Store St, Harbour St, William St, Church St, Henry St, Harbour St and Store St. JUNIOR PPC
Meeting Friday 23, at 7.30pm in St Mary’s Parish Centre.GOD BY ANY OTHER NAME‘Trinity’, a cold, abstract word is all head and no heart. Putting ‘holy’ before it, even ‘most holy’ doesn’t do much for it. ‘Holy’ is a little on the remote side too. Listen to today’s first reading and see if calling the God we meet here ‘Trinity’ does God justice.Putting names on God (we have to use at least one to know whom we’re talking about) does God no favours - nor us either. It can give the illusion of comprehending God to a degree that may not be true. It takes mystery from God. It seems to make God more approachable - or should that be manageable? But removing God’s mystery removes God’s challenge. We call God, ‘Father’. We call God, ‘Love’. These are the closest approximations of human language to what God is. But even these fail to do God justice. God is everything good that these could ever imply, and much, much more besides. ‘Father’ and ‘Love’ are but tips of icebergs in a sea of mystery.Today we celebrate God as is: Father, Son, and Spirit. We celebrate God’s mystery and unknowability. For, if God could be ‘known’, God would not be God. Our journey to the ‘God in a cloud’ of Exodus peaks when we meet the God in our heart today. Breathtaking !(Fr Tom Cahill, Intercom May 2008)
