BEING A WITNESS

John the Baptist is the first Christian witness - the first person to lead others to Jesus, whom he identifies as the Messiah.  John’s relationship with Jesus is beautifully put by St Augustine:

“I listen: He is the one who speaks

I am enlightened: He is the Light

I am the ear: He is the Word.

Later in the Gospels, Jesus tells the disciples that when they receive the Spirit of Truth, “you will be My witnesses”.  That charge is given to each one of us.  Through Baptism, we have received the Spirit; we have been called to witness to Jesus.  We are asked to point away from ourselves to Jesus, to show others the way to Him. People may need help to come to Jesus and, indeed, none of us comes to Him alone.

Have we lost the courage to speak to each other about Jesus; about the things that matter most to us?  Will anyone care?  We must have the courage to speak about Jesus to each other, to share what we believe.  We know what we believe because we love - and in the power of that love we chan share our belief with each other.

Have courage for the great sorrows of life, and have patience for the small ones..

Go to sleep in peace, God is awake. - Victor Hugo

URGENT APPEAL

There is an urgent need for volunteers to maintain Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist in the Parish.  For the last 14 years, the Lord Jesus, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament, has been adored day and night in the Hospital Chapel.  To maintain this there is an urgent need for people to give some time to insure the vigil keeps going.  If you can spare one hour a week, please consider doing so.  The hours that need to be covered are: Sunday 1.00pm, 2.00pm, 8.00pm; Monday 7.00am; Tuesday 2.00am, 3.00am; Wednesday 8.00am, 9.00am, 8.00pm; Thursday 12 noon, 5.00pm; Friday 2.00am, 3.00am; Sat 3.00am, 4.00am, 1.00pm, 2.00pm.

Currently many people have to do multiple hours adoration.  Please help.  Ph 9321232.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

John 1:29-34

1. John is one who directs people to Jesus. Who have been the people in your life who pointed you to Jesus and who helped you to understand something of his message of love and compassion?

2. In the narrative John recognised that Jesus had more to offer people than he himself but he had the humility not to need to be the star of the show. Whom have you known with that grounded sense of their own place?

3. John proclaims Jesus as one who takes away the sin of the world. Who have been the people who for you continued this mission of Jesus and led you from sin and guilt to forgiveness and freedom? For whom have you been able to do this?

4. It was not just on the cross that Jesus gave his life as the Lamb of God. His public ministry was a constant struggle against injustice and oppression. When have you shared in this mission of Jesus?

John Byrne OSA, Intercom Dec/Jan
