CALL TO HOLINESS

Today, Our Lord is inviting us to come on a journey to holiness with Him.

What an invite!  What a companion!

Knowing our frailty and our human weakness, we might find it very difficult to accept.

Old habits, such as judging others; holding on to past hurts and grudges; seeking revenge; not open to forgiveness; meanspiritedness; are the kind of things that our Lord is trying to eliminate from our lives.  He is showing us another way and giving us another set of values, such as love of enemies, forgiveness and turning the other cheek.

This is the way He lived; this is the way He asks us to live.  He created us all, even our enemies and He loves us all unconditionally.

When we become loving people, everything changes.

“Be holy, therefore, as your Heavenly Father is Holy”, Matt 5:48

LENT IS COMING

The annual time of Penance and Fasting is close at hand.  We should see Lent as an invitation to bring change into our lives.  Last year our programme went very well and the response to all our extra Masses and other Liturgies was truly wonderful.  This year we are proposing some new invitations:

A) a lunch time (1.10pm) Mass in Tullamore Church on Wednesdays, followed by soup and a roll in the Parish Centre - part of a Fasting Programme;

B)  a Friday Morning Mass in Durrow at 8.45am to facilitate children and their parents on their way to school;

C)  a weekly summary of the daily Mass Readings for Lent, made available for all;

D)  a challenge to young people to ‘Live Lent’ by coming to weekday Mass at least once a week and fasting to a limited extent;

E) a special Dawn Mass on Easter Sunday for all, especially young people, followed by breakfast at the venue.

Watch this space for more information!

ALPHA

The Alpha course continues this week, Monday after the 10.00am Mass in the Parish Centre and Tuesday, 8.00pm in the Day Chapel.

The theme this week is:  How Can We Have Faith?

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

MATTHEW 5:38-48

1 Jesus tells us to act out of love and says that acting out of love is better than acting out of revenge. What does your experience tell you?

2 Perhaps you have at times hit back in revenge when you have been hurt or offended. What effect did this have on you, on others and on your relationship with them? Contrast this with the times when you resisted the urge to retaliate. What effect did this have on you, on others and on your relationship with them … at the time, and in the longterm?

3 From other passages in the Gospels it is clear that Jesus did not mean that we should ignore injustices and never make a stand against others. What lessons have you learned in life on when and how to make a stand? What wisdom would you share with others from your experience?
