REJOICE

In today’s psalm Mary invites us to rejoice with her in her song of Praise, echoing the first reading - our salvation is near.  She knows from first hand that the love she has been freely given has liberated her completely from selfishness, enabling her to rejoice in Another - the God who saved her and saves each one of us.

In the security of that Love, both herself and John the Baptist re-echo the same Sentiment - John says “I am not worthy to undo the strap of His sandal” and Mary “Rejoice, for who am I that God has shown me favour!”  They were free to love and serve with joy, both the one Who is the fulfilment of all our desires, and every one of us.

With that freedom to which we are all called, and enabled to strive towards, the Good News will be preached, broken hearts will be mended and prison bars will be broken.  It is the Holy Spirit who will help us do this for each other.  Reason indeed to rejoice.

If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything.
PARISH CAROL SERVICE

A Carol Service in aid of charity, will take place this evening, Sunday 11th, in the Church of the Assumption at 7.30pm.  All Church choirs from Tullamore and Durrow will  participate.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

John 1:6-8, 19-28

1 John the Baptist came to bear witness to Jesus. Who have been the people who have borne witness to you of the good news of the gospel that God loves you - a friend, a parent, a teacher, etc? To whom have you borne that witness?

2 John appears in the story as one who had the courage to be himself in the face of loud and aggressive people. He was also a person who knew his own value, did not make exaggerated claims and was content with his mission. Can you recall times when you have been able to be yourself, even in the face of criticism from others?

3 John was ‘the voice of one crying out in the wilderness’ – announcing confidently to those in the wilderness that they must not despair because God’s grace will come to them at any moment. Have you had the experience of being in the wilderness, feeling lost? From whom did you hear a voice that gave you hope? Have you been able to give hope to other people when they were in the wilderness?
