THE DEEP END
Do an internet search for ‘first world problems’ and you’ll find lists of complaints about just how challenging modern life can be. The advertising industry bombards us with the message that life consists in having the most up to date product because ‘you’re worth it’. It highlights our tendency to worry about material things and forget what’s important. Most of us tend to accumulate possessions over time.
The character in today’s gospel had such a good harvest of crops that he ran out of space. He built bigger barns and sat back to ‘eat, drink and have a good time’. Yet things did not go according to plan.
Today’s reading offers us the opportunity to examine our relationship with possessions and to make some choices in our lives. We can remain as we are or move towards accepting the invitation to store up treasurers for eternal life by sharing with our neighbour and caring for our environment.
‘Lord on this day, fill us with your love so that we may gain wisdom of heart’.
SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS
Luke 12:13-21
‘One’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions’, said Jesus. What have you found by experience to be more important in life than possessions? What brought this home to you?
‘Be on your guard against all kinds of greed’. Perhaps you have seen how greed can lead to trouble in public life, in family life and in the personal life of individuals. What has helped you to guard against greed? What benefits have you experienced when you were less greedy?
The message of the parable could be summed up in saying ‘If you want to give God a laugh, tell him your plans’. Life takes many twists and turns we do not anticipate. When have you found that you have had to change your plans because of unexpected circumstances? What has helped you to be flexible and resourceful at such times?

THE GATHERING 2013
Gathering celebrations are on the weekend of August 16th to 18th and begin with a historical tour based on the canal bridges from Whitehall to the Clara Bridge looking at the wonderful history of that area of town. The walk will begin at 7pm looking at the Canal Harbor, the buildings that once stood there, to Convent Road, the Kilbeggan Bridge, close to the site of the old work house, down Clontarf Road finishing up in the Heritage Centre.
On Saturday the Parish will welcome home visitors. Following 7.30pm Mass there will be a celebration in the Church grounds and also in the Parish Centre with food and live music.
Sunday will mark the culmination of the festival. The annual cemetery Mass takes place at 1pm. Everyone is asked to walk to the cemetery! Walking and talking gives us a chance to come together and celebrate families and friends. There will be a chance to mend bridges if needs be, looking to the future with hope.
CEMETERY SUNDAY MASS
The annual blessing of the graves takes place on Aug 18th this is at the heart of the Parish’s Gathering Event. This celebration takes place every year on 15th Aug or the closest Sunday afterwards. In the 1960s the altar was built at the centre of the cemetery so as the Mass could be celebrated in full view. This year during the Mass a special plot will be blessed to remember the many children who are buried in Clonminch Cemetery.
PARISH GATHERING PHOTOGRAPH
To mark the Gathering and the week long celebration, following the Mass in Clonminch, the Parish is going to take a “Community Photograph”, this will take place at 2.30pm in the grounds of Colaiste Choilm. This will be a historic event which will be remembered in years to come. Please come along with your family and friends. Even if you do not attend the Cemetery Sunday Mass it would be wonderful to have as many people as possible to be part of the photograph.
MASS CARDS
The custom of sending a Mass Card is a very important tradition in the Irish Church. There are two purposes for this practice, firstly offering the Mass for the eternal repose of the deceased person’s soul and secondly, an act of solidarity and sympathy with the bereaved. Mass” stipends or offerings” are strictly regulated by the Church. A priest may receive only one stipend a day regardless of how many masses he offers. As a result of the many Mass intentions received in this Parish it is not possible to offer them all here. The surplus intentions are sent to priests in parts of the world who have no such stipends and to the Irish College in Rome, to assist priests there who are pursuing further studies.
BANK HOLIDAY MASS
As tomorrow Monday 5th August is a Bank Holiday there will only be one Mass at 11am.
