CHRIST FIRST

The Gospel reading today makes tough demands.  Renounce everything and recognise that Christ must be preferred to everything.

The religion that Jesus sets before us is not an easy one.  If we are to be true disciples, there must be a radical renunciation of all that might keep us from following him. Christ must come first.  Worldly, materialistic values must be set aside.  The love of money, power, influence, hatred, revenge must all be renounced.  Instead of loving them we must love Christ above all.  Love of Christ must be the central focus of our lives as his disciples.  There can be no half measures and there are no soft options. True discipleship means total commitment.

Onesimus was a slave and his master was Philemon.  Onesimus stole from his master and ran away.  He was converted to Christianity by Paul.  In his letter to Philemon, Paul requests him to forgive Onesimus and not only that, but to welcome him as a brother – a tough call that sets a standard for a true follower of Christ.  There is a cost in true discipleship.  It is total dedication, total commitment of oneself to Our Lord, Jesus Christ.  He comes first.

DIOCESAN CHANGES

The Diocesan changes announced by Bishop Smith during the week involved Tullamore Parish.  Fr Patrick has been appointed Parish Priest of Collinstown in Co Westmeath. We congratulate him on his appointment and wish him health and happiness in his new post.  I also thank him for his great work in Tullamore over the past three years, especially in his work in establishing Alpha and his work with young people in the parish.

The second change is that I am stepping down as Parish Priest, but remaining here as a Curate.  Our new Parish Priest will be Fr Joe Gallagher who is presently Parish Priest of Kilcormac and I know he will be warmly welcomed to Tullamore.  The decision to step down was one I had thought about for some time.  It was taken mainly on the grounds of age and I look forward to continuing to work in the parish for as long as I feel able to do so.  Meanwhile, I welcome Fr Joe and I wish Fr Patrick every success and blessing in his new role.

DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE TO LOURDES 12-17 SEPT

“Lourdes, a door to faith” is the pastoral theme for our pilgrimage to Lourdes this year. On Thursday 12th over 800 pilgrims from our Diocese will travel to Lourdes, among them are many of our elderly and sick and over 200 volunteer helpers. These are important days for our entire diocese. This is the diocese at work with people accompanying one another on a journey. This is when we unite in prayer and bring our needs and thanksgivings to the altar of the Lord through the intercession of our Lady. During this time we invite all the people of the diocese to be part of this great movement of prayer, which leads us through the door of faith and into the presence of God and his action in our lives. This is also a time to acknowledge with gratitude the generosity of so many people in our diocese who make this pilgrimage possible.
