“ETERNAL HIS MERCIFUL LOVE…” Ps 99

In today’s Gospel Jesus says, “My sheep listen to my voice”. That implies that we have kept Him company frequently enough to recognise it, listen to it and then follow Him. By nature selfish, genuine love is not easy for us. Unless we stay close to the Good Shepherd, we might easily follow the many voices of our own illusions and desires.

Mary of Magdela is interesting in this regard. She, who followed Him right to the foot of the Cross, recognised His voice immediately, despite His total disguise. In joy she wanted to cling to Him, but He told her instead to “go…tell…!”

If we stay close to the Good Shepherd, “the Lamb upon the throne” of the second reading, we too will be filled with joy and the Holy Spirit, as were Paul and Barnabas. This was despite the fact that they were unsuccessful in that part of their mission. Indeed when Mary of Magdala did “go and tell”, they did not believe her either!  When we are close to the Good Shepherd neither success or failure will take away His joy from us, nor the gift of the Holy Spirit.

VOCATIONS SUNDAY

Today the Church throughout the world prays for vocations. Will you make a special effort to ask the Lord for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life?

Pray for the Priests who have ministered to you throughout your life, both living and dead. Keep your parish priests in your prayers throughout the week. Encourage your children, grandchildren, or other young people to consider a vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister. Pray the Rosary for more young people in our Diocese to respond to God’s call.

There will be a collection taken up today for Vocations in the Diocese.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

Congratulations to the children from Scoil Bhríde who received the Eucharist for the first time last Sunday. We wish God’s blessing on them, their families, friends and teachers and all who helped them on their faith journey to this special time.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

John 10:27-30

Jesus tells us that we can rely on his relationship with us. Think of the relationships you have in which you feel safe and secure because there is mutual understanding and the relationship has stood the test of time.

Jesus says that the disciple is one who listens. What is your experience of listening to the word of God in the Scriptures? To what other voices have you listened, and in that way found guidance?

The faithful disciple is also one who follows the path of love that Jesus preached and practiced. Although it may be difficult at times, it is in following Jesus’ path that we find life. Where have you had the experience of listening, responding, loving, and finding life?
