GAUDETE, REJOICE, OUR GOD LIVES In recent times we have grown very used to commissions of enquiry, and in today’s Gospel we hear of another one. On this occasion, the Pharisees want to investigate John who is baptising people with water—a quite different act to the rites of the various sects of the time. They want to know who John is if he is not the Christ, and not Elijah, and not the prophet. They need to pigeon-hole John into some role that they can identify. John’s reply is that he is not any of these, but that he is “A voice that cries in the wilderness: Make a straight way for the Lord.” He is a precursor, a voice for the Word, a lamp and a voice to illuminate and proclaim the Word of the Lord. This is John’s role, and it is our role too. POINSETTIAS Donations of poinsettia for the Altar for Christmas would be most appreciated. Please leave in the Church next Thursday.
