THE CALL TO FOLLOW

In today’s Gospel we hear about the call of Peter, Andrew, James and John by the Lord.  They were not the only ones called.  He has called and is calling each one of us too.  He holds out the invitation to all of us, from the time we were baptised and confirmed, to be “fishers of men” (Mt 4:19).  It is a call to mission that we all share and their response was very courageous.

In today’s world, that generosity and courage is needed more than ever, to build up Christ’s kingdom and to be missionaries of light for all we meet.  The world calls us in many subtle ways, and it can be very difficult to disentangle ourselves from the demands of modern society, to the commitment of discipleship.  We should not be daunted or discouraged, because when we answer the Lord’s call, we are in partnership with Him and we never journey alone.

There is a strong call in the Gospel for repentance if we have failed in our commitment to the Lord and to each other.

Let us ask Him today to strengthen us to respond to the call:

“Repent!  The Kingdom of the Lord is at hand”, (Mt 4:17).

DEATHS

A NEW YEAR, A NEW EXPERIENCE – DISCOVERING CHRIST

Last week we asked if you were fed up of New Year Resolutions that get you nowhere, leave you feeling worse than before.  And if so, would you like a fresh experience, a chance to deepen your faith or maybe Discover Christ for the first time?  If your answer is yes, why not join us for a meal, a DVD and some good conversation around the meaning of life in Jesus Christ.  Starting Saturday 4th February at 7.30pm (after 6.30pm Vigil Mass) in the Parish Centre, “Discovering Christ” is an 8 week Catholic experience that offers the chance to explore answers to some of the most important questions worth asking about God and life.  To register complete the registration form (available from the Bulletin trays) and return to the Parish Centre or bring to any of the Masses next weekend (volunteers will be available to collect them).  Alternatively, you can email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or call us on 0879215838.  Places are limited so please register early.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

Catholic Schools Week Jan 29 - Feb 4

Catholic Schools Week is an annual all-Ireland celebration which invites schools to give expression in an exceptional way to the ethos of Catholic education.  It acknowledges the tremendous contribution that our Catholic primary and post-primary schools make, not just to Irish society, but to the mission of the Church.

During this week we acknowledge the work of our parish Catholic schools.  They are spaces of care and learning and belonging.  They are places where faith is lived and shared. Our parish schools welcome pupils from all faiths and ethnic backgrounds.  In one of our schools we count pupils from 19 different nationalities.  We acknowledge the professionalism and commitment of our schools staff.  We acknowledge the involvement of parents and parents associations.  Our schools are administered by boards of management made up of representatives from the staff, parents, parish and wider community.  Members of the boards give of their time and skills in a voluntary capacity.

During Catholic Schools’ week we have gatherings in the Church for many of the parents, families and pupils of our schools.  In preparation for the week, there will be a special Mass in Tullamore Church on Friday 27 at 11.30am in which many of the schools will come together to pray and sing and praise the Lord.

Our schools are special in our community and we cherish and support them.

CHRISTIAN UNITY WEEK

The Christian Unity Week Service is on today, Sunday 22, at 5.00pm in St. Catherine’s Church, Hop Hill.  This is an opportunity to pray for Christian unity and give thanks for the positive relationships that exist between the churches.  The theme of this year’s Service is “Crossing Barriers”.  The service will be followed by refreshments in the Charleville Centre.
