Thanks be to god

Most of us have experience of giving things to other people, to members of our families, to relations, friends and neighbours. Most of us have experience of doing things for other people, obliging them and helping them out when they need help or are in trouble of some kind. We give and do willingly, and sometimes we are thanked. But, not always. We remember the expression: “Eaten bread is soon forgotten”.  How nice it is to hear the word “Thanks”.

We ourselves, if we care to admit it, make many requests of God. We ask Him for good health; for cures for sickness; for employment; for housing; for success in examinations, and for lots of other things. We do this directly in prayer and often through the intercession of His Blessed Mother, Mary, and the many favourite saints. We are not always aware of the many blessings that have already been poured out on us because we take them for granted. And, maybe, we rarely thank God for them.

Naaman, in the first reading, was an outsider and a leper. The ten lepers in the Gospel story were forced to be outsiders, and one even more so, being a Samaritan—a foreigner. Yet, in spite of being such outsiders, all were cured of their leprosy. But two, Naaman and the Samaritan were healed, that is, they were made whole. They came back to praise and thank God for what He had done for them. Their faith saved them.

Get back into the custom of saying “Thanks be to God”.

(G. Harrison)

Liturgy meeting

Liturgy Meeting on Wed. 12th. October in The Parish Centre at 6:30 p.m.

In the Footsteps of the Nazarene

His Excellency Antoine Audo, Chaldean Catholic Bishop of Aleppo

Aleppo is one of the cities most affected by the conflict in Syria, given the nearly daily bombings that have taken place over the course of the last four years. Its bishop, His Excellency Antoine Audo, begins by affirming: “Christians are not interested in the war and do not have an organization to defend themselves. So, because of the war there is a great deal of emigration. Many young people leave Syria because of the danger they live in and because Syria does not offer enough work to make a living today.”

When the war started, on March 15, 2011, the Christian population in Aleppo numbered 170,000. Christian communities were very active and involved in the society of Aleppo, which had 2.5 million inhabitants. After five years of war, the city has been left with little more than 30,000 Christians. Even though the Church tries to maintain its historical presence in Syria, “many Christians are leaving because of the war, unemployment, and poverty.” It is a sad reality, given the fact that Aleppo is just fifty kilometers from Antioch, the place where Christians were first called Christians, at the time of St. Peter and St. Paul.

These are just the opening paragraphs of the bishop’s letter. The full text is available in the Parish Centre and on our website tullamoreparish.ie

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

Luke 17: 11 - 19

The cure of the lepers is not just a physical cure, it also brought the people cured back from exclusion into the community. Perhaps you have experienced the movement from exclusion to inclusion. What was it like for you to be accepted once again when you had felt excluded?

Who were the people who brought about this change for you? For whom you have been able to do this, perhaps by healing a rift with a friend, or by listening to the opinion of someone you had dismissed out of hand, or by opening the door in some way to another?

Some people work hard at breaking down barriers in society., seeking inclusion for those who find themselves labelled as lepers by society or by a section of society. Where have you seen this happening? Who has been doing this kind of work? Where is the good news in such action?

When we do good for another we may not do it for the thanks we hope to get, but it can hurt when no gratitude is shown. How have you experienced the positive effects of thanks given and received?
