A CHALLENGING THOUGHT

It is only a few short weeks since Jesus was telling his disciples to greet people with the words “Peace to this house”. We like to think of Jesus more with peace than division.

At the time Luke was writing his Gospel the early Christian Community was experiencing division. Not everyone was willing to accept the teachings of Jesus. People were either for him or against him. If the message of Jesus is one of forgiveness, why has it caused such division in the lives of his followers? Why has the good news not been accepted by all? This is a question for us to think hard on. It is a challenge for all of us.

We may at times face ridicule or rejection from the world. We may have to change the company we keep or leave our old ways of life behind us in order to truly follow him.

Let us not forget that at a point in his ministry, his mother and his brothers came to take him home, convinced that he had gone out of his mind. (Mk 3:21-31)

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION

Tomorrow, Monday 15th is the Feast of the Assumption. Mass times will be as follows:

CEMETERY SUNDAY IN CLONMINCH

Cemetery Sunday is next Sunday, 21st, at 1.00pm in Clonminch Cemetery. This is an important day in our Parish, as we remember our dead and their families.

There will be no 1.00pm Mass in the Church of the Assumption.

We ask all families to continue removing waste material from their graves and we acknowledge the efforts that people have been making in maintaining them and keeping the cemetery tidy.

The annual collection taken up at the cemetery gates will help us to maintain the cemetery to its usual high standard. Your support will be most appreciated.

Eucharistic Ministers are needed for the Cemetery Mass. Please leave your name in the Sacristy and check your station number.

CHURCH OF THE ASSUMPTION

Our parish church was dedicated 30 years ago on August 17th,1986. It was a very special day in our community as our new church emerged from the ashes of the old. In a time of great loss, something new was born.

Our church building continues to be an important gathering place and a place of prayer and quiet reflection. We gather to celebrate the sacraments, we gather to commend our dead to the Lord, to welcome the Lord into our lives at Mass, to remember our sick and those who are away from home. It is in our church that we meet together as a faithful community, the people of God.

In a letter to parishioners on the day of dedication in 1986 Bishop Smith noted:-

“The dedication and blessing of a new Parish Church is an occasion calling for reflection and prayer. This new Church, erected on the soil of this community, is truly an offering of the whole community to God. It is in every sense of the word a sign of God’s presence - His presence in the community and His presence in our lives. In this act of consecration we praise God who allows us to be gathered by Christ into His dwelling; we praise God who makes His Church into a living body made holy by the blood of Christ. This new house of God calls all to raise their voices in praise to God, to accept His gifts, to hear His word and, above all, to celebrate the Lord’s sacrifice”
