CORPUS CHRISTI

Today’s Gospel reading is very brief.  It tells us of the wonderful miracle performed by Jesus when he multiplied the loaves and fish to feed thousands in a lonely place outside the town of Bethsaida.  The crowd had followed him there, hungry to hear him speak about the Kingdom of God and anxious to be healed of their ailments.  The day was drawing to a close and the disciples took the initiative concerning the crowd, by now physically hungry, suggesting that Jesus should send them away to find their own food and lodgings.  But Jesus said to them, “give them some food yourselves”, highlighting the apostles’ future responsibility in caring for Christian communities.

Then, in a sequence of actions foreshadowing the institution of the Eucharist – looking up to heaven, blessing the food and breaking it – he provided for the crowd.  The apostles played a very definite part in this event.  They gave the food to the crowd.  This was their work and mission – to nourish the people.  And it is still the work and mission of their successors today, to feed the people the Body and Blood of Christ.  In today’s world, they must continue to talk about the Kingdom of God, cure those in need of spiritual healing, and nourish the people with the Body and Blood of Christ.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

Congratulations to the children from Gaelscoil Eiscir Ríada who received the Eucharist for the first time last Sunday.  We wish God’s blessing on them, their families, friends and teachers and all who helped them on their faith journey to this special time.

FIRST NATIONAL CHURCH COLLECTION FOR THE SUPPORT OF THE WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES

The First National Church collection for the support of the World Meeting of Families 2018 will take place next weekend, 4/5 June.

Pope Francis has chosen Ireland to host the 9th World Meeting of Families during 2018.  The dates and theme of the Meeting will be announced by Pope Francis himself. In 2018, the 9th World Meeting of Families is expected to attract thousands of Catholic families from around the globe to Ireland.  It is hoped that this very special pastoral initiative will present all of us in the Church with the opportunity, and the challenge, to renew, support and strengthen Irish families in their commitment to their faith.

Hosting a global event of this size requires a huge amount of planning and financial outlay on behalf of the host country.  Accordingly, our bishops have now established a National Finance Committee to provide advice on the financial planning for the World Meeting of Families in Ireland.  To support the hosting of the event we intend to hold three national church collections, the first of which will take place next weekend.  The remaining collections will take place in 2017 and 2018.  Please visit worldmeeting2018.ie for more details.

The World Meeting of Families was a pastoral initiative of St John Paul II.  Held every three years, and co-ordinated by the Pontifical Council for The Family, it is the largest universal gathering of Catholic families and brings together families from all over the world in faith and celebration.
