ALL SAINTS’ DAY

Today we celebrate All Saints’ Day in honour of all the saints, known and unknown, and there are a great many whose names we do not know.  These were ordinary people just like us whose faith in God led them to believe that their God was indeed a God who saves.  If we believe, there is hope for us all.

Tomorrow we celebrate All Soul’s Day, when we remember the departed faithful who have not yet been purified and reached Heaven.  And we know very many of these ordinary people who did their best on earth to follow the teaching of Jesus.

The goal of the Church is to be united with God in the glory of Heaven.  In the Apostles’ Creed, we state: “I believe…in the communion of saints”.  It is our belief that we in the Church on earth are united in prayer with the saints in Heaven and with the souls who have not yet reached Heaven.  By our prayers, we honour the saints and ask for their intercession for us and for our departed, so that one day we too may enjoy their company in the glory of God in Heaven.

The Beatitudes are the road map on the route to Heaven.  If we follow this map to the best of our ability, and we follow the example and inspiration of the saints, we can believe and have hope that with God’s grace we will get there.
