SAY BUT THE WORD

In today’s Gospel the woman with the haemorrhage poses quite a challenge to one’s faith. From her, there was no long story or request, simply a touch to Jesus’ garment. It was not a thoughtless touch like that of the crowd, but a touch of unquestioning faith and trust in Jesus’ desire and power to heal. It touched Jesus’ Heart instantly and just as instantly she knew she was healed. He commended her for it.

The question I ask myself  is – what is the quality of my faith as I touch, not just Jesus’ garment, but the Risen Jesus Himself in Holy Communion? “Lord I am not worthy…Say but the Word”.

Jairus’ faith stands in for his 12 year old daughter. The details of this story are so vivid – as vivid as an eye witness account – probably Peter’s memory of it which Mark so carefully records. At Jesus Word “Talitha Kum” the little girl gets up and starts to walk and then His thoughtful request “give her something to eat”.

In both the above miracles what activated the Power of God’s Word was simple faith. The father of a deaf mute little boy in the Gospels said something to Jesus that might well help us too- “Lord, I believe, help Thou my unbelief.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

Like this woman, have you had the experience of a cure, an improvement, a success, after a long period of nothing happening? What was that like for you?  What made the difference?  On that occasion was there anything different in you, in others in the circumstances – something that paved the way for the change or improvement?

‘Who touched me?’ Jesus asked. It seems a strange request with crowds miling around. Many people brushed against him but the woman mad contact in a different way. The same can happen in our relationships. We brush against many people but make real contact only with a few. Who are the people you have touched, and who has touched you?  What difference has this made to you and to them?

It can also happen that there are many occasions when we brush against Jesus, and the other occasions when we have a sense that we are in contact with him. What deepens your contact with Jesus?

When Jairus asked Jesus to come and cure his daughter, some thought there was no point. Sometimes a situation can look like a lost cause. Has it ever happened to you that subsequent events showed there was hope where you thought there was none?
