DOUBT

Are we one of those people who never take anyone’s word for anything, who always wants proof, a guarantee that he/she is hearing the truth?  Their continued reaction is always doubt.  Are we like the apostle Thomas then, who would not accept the word of his brothers that Jesus had in fact risen from the dead, unless he saw for himself.

All that happened during Holy Week on the Hill of Calvary had crushed Thomas’ dream of a lifetime and left him a deeply wounded and angry man.  He had hit ‘rock bottom’.

The account of Thomas is consoling because our path to faith in the Lord is often a slow walk through times of doubt and hesitation.  Like him we can get angry and our faith could be shattered by the loss of a job, the death of a loved one, a broken marriage or a person who has let us down.  Thomas represents all of us who are unsure of our belief.  His doubts are in all of us.

Jesus understands our time of crisis and despair and makes our faith twice as strong like Thomas, as he acknowledged him risen from the dead.  We can also with deep conviction “My Lord and my God”.

DIVINE MERCY

The Sunday after Easter has been designated Divine Mercy Sunday. On this day we contemplate the eternal and never failing mercy of Almighty God. Though we sin, in Jesus crucified and risen, we have been given forgiveness and are called to repent from all that leads us away from God. On this Sunday let us ask the Lord again and again "for the sake of His sorrowful passion have mercy on us and on the whole world."

JUBILEE YEAR 2015-2016 THE YEAR OF MERCY

Pope Francis has announced a special Jubilee, or Holy Year beginning on the 8th of December. A Holy Year normally takes place every 25 years, the last one being the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000. Now and again, such as in 1933 and 1983, the Pope can call an extraordinary Holy Year. The theme of the Holy Year is Mercy. Pope Francis often speaks of mercy. He has said "the Church must be a place of mercy freely given, where everyone can feel welcomed, loved, forgiven and encouraged to live the good life of the Gospel."  Our prayer for the coming Holy Year and this Divine Mercy Sunday is that God will give us all the grace to show mercy and receive mercy
