LIFE INVESTMENT

In the parable today Jesus tests his servants to see what they will do with the talents he gave them.  One got five, another two,  and one talent to the third.  They were given to each according to their ability, but they were not theirs to dispense as they pleased.  Neither was it alright to hide them unused to wither away.

Talents are a great gift from God and are given to be shared for the service of the community.  We should see these talents as opportunities for sharing because by sharing they are not diminished.  They become even richer blessings.  Burying our talent in the ground like the third servant is not a good idea.  The worthless servant clings to the little he is given and it fails to grow.; We too can become so wrapped up in ourselves and our concerns that we fail to face up to our responsibilities.  The ordinary deeds of love offered for the benefit of others may not seem to matter much but are most important in the eyes of God.  How many talents you have is not important.  The ability to hope and invest your life in Christ is.  “Help us Lord to remain faithful in the small things of life, so we may be trusted with greater when we come into your kingdom”.

FUNDRAISING

We would like to thank everyone who donated old money.  We will have a final figure soon!  A lot of old English pennies were donated, some dating back to the 1880s.  We believe that some of these may have a value for collectors.  If anyone is knowledgeable in this area please contact Tom in the Parish Centre.

DURROW GRAVEYARD

The Durrow Graveyard Committee are dedicated to keeping the graveyard in pristine condition.  A recent Health and Safety audit has highlighted the need for a handrail on the path from the Church to the graveyard.  This will cost €7000 and the Committee would be grateful for a once off donation for this project from Parishioners.  Donations can be made to John O’Connor or Tom Whelan.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

Jesus was angry at the way some Jewish leaders treated God’s revelation of his love for his people.  They had buried it by obscuring it under a multiplicity of rules.  These became the centre of religious practice rather than a deep faith and trust in the forgiving love of God.  What part have rules played for you in your life?  Have they been life-giving?  On the level of our own personal life, faith is not given to us to be locked away, but to be ‘traded’ with.  We trade with it when we believe in its value, trust it, and use it, bringing it into the experiences we have in daily life.  Can you recall times when relying on your faith has brought you rewards?    Likewise with our own personal gifts and talents.  We can fall into the trap of seeing these as our personal possessions so that we can do with them as we like, rather than share them as gifts so that they can be multiplied.  What is your experience of hoarding or sharing your own gifts?  When did you feel most alive?  The master in the story is also someone we can celebrate.  He is the kind of person who does not cling to power.  He entrusts his property (his cause) to others.  Perhaps you have known leaders who have done this?  Have you done it yourself?  As parents have you entrusted the lives of your children to them so that they can find life to the full by taking responsibility for their own lives?
