INVITATION

Imagine the queues and scrambles if free tickets were available for a Celebrity Wedding the All Ireland Final, or a Rock Concert. In today’s Gospel there is an open invitation from God for the celebration of life, but many people turned it down. People had excuses. Every excuse is good, but is only a half story.

The truth is that they were not interested. As Christians we are commissioned by the Lord to pass this invitation to others to share in the banquet of life which is part of God’s Kingdom. At times we have responded to this invitation. On reflection what was it like for you to bring others to a fuller life.

At other times we can identify with the people in the Gospel. What is my personal half story for not responding to God’s invitation?  But like the psalmist we believe “he guides us along the right path.  He is true to His name”.

GARDA CHOIR CONCERT

A concert featuring the Garda Choir and the Sacred Heart School Choir will take place in the Church of the Assumption on 24th October.  Tickets €10 will be available next week in the Parish Centre.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

The place to be happy is here.  The time to be happy is now.  The way to be happy is to make others so.

MISSION SUNDAY 19 OCTOBER

October is Mission Month.  There are approximately 1,500 Irish born missionaries working in more than 80 countries.  They continue to spread the Gospel through their work, their deep commitment to the people they serve and their Faith.  In essence, they lead by example and have helped to change, for the better, millions of lives all over the globe.  It is fitting then that the theme for this years’ Mission Month of October is ‘that they may have life’..life in all its richness and dignity.  The richness of knowing the Gospel and Jesus Christ and the dignity of having food to eat, a roof to sleep under and work to go to.  Through their work, our missionaries strive to make all this a reality for the people they serve.

‘The Society for the Propagation of the Faith’ organizes the Mission Sunday collection in all Churches nationwide, which this year takes place on the 19th October.  We are invited to reflect on our call to bring Christ to others, while remembering to pray and to assist the young churches that they may have the spiritual and financial resources to grow and in turn announce the Good News.  For further information on the world of Propagation of the Faith or to make a donation please visit www.wmi.ie.

NOVEMER MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS

The month of November is traditionally dedicated to praying for the Holy Souls.  As Catholics we believe in Purgatory.  This is understood as a time of purification before entering into the presence of God.  In life we sometimes do things that are different to what God wants; we are tempted and we sin.  Purgatory is our final stage of preparation for the happiness of Heaven.

We pray for our loved ones who have died to help them on their journey.  Each year  we compile an Altar List of the Dead.  We offer Mass for them on November 2nd and 3rd and during all parish Masses on the first Friday of the month.  Over the next few weeks special pages for the List are available around the Church.  You can bring and fill them in and drop them into the parish centre or in the special envelop in your monthly collection box.

It is worthwhile sitting down alone with your family to think of your loved ones who have died over the years.  Our prayers for them gives us comfort uniting us closer to them and The Lord.
