A WONDERFUL GENEROSITY

The parable in today’s Gospel is one that bothers many of us – it doesn’t seem fair that those working a few hours should get the same wage as those who were there from dawn.  We think of it as unjust but the lesson here is not justice – it’s about a generosity we can’t really understand.

We can all be jealous or envious at times, depending on our circumstances.  The trick is to appreciate all that we have been given in life and not to allow feelings of “poor me/us” to control us.  It is this attitude of gratitude that Jesus tries to instill in the full day workers (and in us).  Which of us wouldn’t be delighted to receive a full day’s pay for a few hours work?  What keeps us from realising that our lives are actually a series of such gifts?

This parable, like so many others, challenges us to see the reign of God in a different way from the way we see our everyday world.  We are invited, through this story, to recognise and acknowledge God’s goodness to us and to accept that God is equally generous with all our brothers and sisters.

Do I let envy fill my mind and heart?  Or do I know and appreciate my own unique contributions to the Kingdom of God?

SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN

The Parish of Tullamore is committed to ensuring that best practice safeguarding children standards are being implemented, so that we can ensure the safety and well-being of our children, young people and the adults who work with them.  Over the next few weeks, consent forms and volunteer forms will be distributed to all groups.  If you need advice about these forms or other policy issues, please feel free to contact local safeguarding reps, 0579326604.

GÁRDA CHOIR CONCERT

A parish fundraising concert, featuring the Gárda Choir and the Sacred Heart School Choir, will take place on Friday 24th October, in the Church of the Assumption.  Tickets priced at €10 now available from the Parish Centre.

NEW ALPHA BEGINS

Both Popes Francis & Benedict invite us Christians to encounter the person of Jesus Christ.  But what does that mean?  How can we encounter him?  Would you like to explore these questions?

The first session the new Alpha series begins with “Who is Jesus?” on Monday 22nd, at 8.00pm in the Day Chapel.  Everyone is invited.

PARISH MISSION “THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL” MON 29TH - FRI 3RD

Pope Francis has asked us to be messengers of "the joy of the Gospel." This is the theme for the annual Mission in honour of the Little Flower; St Therese. Each evening at 7.30 a different speaker will share their ideas on the joy that is found in our relationship with Jesus:

Monday “Joy in Sickness”: Brenda Drumm, Catholic Communications office, Maynooth, shares her experience of cancer.

Tuesday “The Joy of Youth”: Jonny Somerville, youth worker based in Dublin, who is a wonderful communicator of God's love.

Wednesday “The Joy of Marriage”: Stephen Cummins, former director of ACCORD, reflects on marriage - the joys and sorrows.

Thursday “The Joy of Hope”: Cindy O'Connor, CEO of Pieta House, shares on mental health and self- harm, especially in young people.

Friday “Mary - The Cause of our Joy - Holy Mary, Mother of God”: Fr John Walsh OP, will speak about Our Lady and her mother's love she has for us all.

Mission prayers at all Masses during the week, with the speaker at the 7.30 evening Mass.

MISSION PRAYER

Father, almighty and ever living God, You are the source of all life and love.

You created all things and you fill the Earth with your joy.

You sent your Son, born of the Virgin, to show us the depths of Your love.

On the Cross, He washed away our sins.

Rising from the dead, the disciples rejoiced, seeing the Lord.

He sent the Holy Spirit to make our hearts beat with the joy of your love.

Help us to be witnesses to the joy of your Son's Gospel.

We thank you for your blessings.  May joy always fill our hearts - even when life is difficult -knowing that we are your sons and daughters.

During this Mission, we ask you to hear our prayers (silently offer your intention).

Like St Therese, may your love be the joy of our lives.

We make this prayer through Christ Our Lord.  Amen.

PRAYER AND PETITION

“DO NOT BE ANXIOUS ABOUT ANYTHING, BUT IN EVERYTHING BY PRAYER AND PETITION WITH THANKSGIVING, PRESENT YOUR REQUESTS TO GOD” (Philippians 4:6)
