THEY ALL ATE AND WERE SATISFIED

There is a saying that being satisfied is not having all we want but wanting and appreciating all we have.

Bread and fish were two basic elements of a meal round  Galilee  - even the poor used them as their mainstay.  What intrigues us in this account of miraculous abundance is that Jesus recognised their hunger, decided to do something practical about it and used what was to hand – fish and bread, but for a deep purpose.  Were the people satisfied because they were used to this simple food?  At least they would have enough to let them stay on longer to listen to Jesus.  Was that what satisfied them?  Or were they satisfied because there was so much generosity and caring shown to them?  Were they satisfied because they realised that the food was a sign of a Kingdom which nourishes all, even those who came unprepared?

When we take the food that Jesus offers us – the Eucharist, the Word and even all the simple signs of life and goodness that we experience – we have to be willing to pause and acknowledge a gift of sheer satisfaction.  This satisfaction comes not so much from the provisions as from the Provider.

During this week could we consider the many ways that God satisfies our hungers.  In what ways can we make room for gratitude?

CHARITABLE DONATIONS - CHY4 CERTS

Once again we appeal to parishioners who have not yet done so, to please sign and return CHY4 Certs which were sent out earlier in the year.

As we can claim approx 45% of a tax refund on these forms, they are a vital source of revenue for the Parish.

Again, if you have mislaid the original sent out to you, contact Noeleen in the Parish Centre for a new one.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

The news of the death of John the Baptist prompted Jesus to go off to be alone, but the crowds followed him. Despite his personal sorrow he was able to reach out in compassion to the crowd.  Perhaps there have been times when you have put personal preferences and desires to one side in order to reach out to another.  What was it like for you when you were able to do this?  When Jesus saw the crowd, he recognized their need and reached out to them.  Who has been a Jesus person for you, someone who recognized your need and reached out to you?  For whom have you been a Jesus person?  The scene is a Eucharistic symbol reminding us of the sacred meal to which all believers are invited to receive nourishment from the Lord.  How has the Eucharist been a source of nourishment for you?  When the disciples became aware of the problem they wanted to send the crowd away but Jesus told them ‘You give them something to eat’.  They thought what they had was insufficient but Jesus used the little they had to feed the crowd. When we give the little we have to a situation the results are often beyond our expectations. Have you had this experience?

A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES

He spoke the truth in a country torn apart by social injustice.  He stood for human rights during an era of shocking violence and torture.  But the brutal dictatorship chose not to listen and he was assassinated for his beliefs.  His name was Oscar Romero, Archbishop of El Salvador.
