CORPUS CHRISTI-THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

Pope Paul VI wrote about the feast of Corpus Christi that “many practises of Eucharistic devotion have been inspired by divine grace.  The Catholic Church uses them to show even greater homage to Christ, to thank him for so great a gift and to implore his mercy”.

This feast is a splendid opportunity to think about God’s most striking gift to us and a reminder to renew our faith and deepen our appreciation of the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.  If sharing the Eucharist is to mean more than going to Mass and providing nourishment for our own private spiritual lives, we have to reach out to the members of our community.  We have to forgive, overlook weaknesses and rise above the divisions and injustices which keep us apart.

Our Catholic faith accepts that the real presence of Christ is found in the Eucharist.  This belief and that there has been a change in the substance of bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ provides the basis for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.  This is why we are encouraged to spend time praying before the Blessed Sacrament.

I am the living bread which has come down from heaven.  Anyone who eats this bread will live forever and the bread that I shall give is my flesh for the life of the world (John 6:51)

WORLD YOUTH DAY

So much is happening this month for young people; the exams have started, so has the task of getting work for the summer holidays and the World Cup is kicking off!  Last summer the World Youth Day took place in Brazil with Pope Francis and over 3 million young people gathered in Rio de Janeiro.  Think about your faith as a young person with Christ and maybe explore what World Youth Days are about www.dioceseofmeath.ie/youth.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

Jesus tells us that to have life we need more than physical nourishment.  How have you been aware of deeper hungers? What has met that deeper longing in you?

Jesus tells us that it is not just something he gives us which will give us life, but himself in his life, death and resurrection.  How has your faith in the person of Jesus fed you?

Jesus speaks about ‘drawing life’ from him.  In day to day living what are the practices which support faith and help you to draw life from Jesus?

The Eucharist is one of the ways in which we draw life from Jesus.  Recall with gratitude how the Eucharist has been a source of nourishment and life for you.  Perhaps you can also think of human examples of people drawing life from one another.  From whom have you drawn life?  Who has been able to draw life from you?
