THE CHALLENGE!

Take the lowest place!

Invite those who cannot repay you!

The Gospel begins with Jesus going for a meal to the house of one of the leading Pharisees.  All the guests watch Jesus closely.  In that ‘hostile’ context Jesus confronts the Pharisees about choosing places at table and guests.

It is natural for us to surround ourselves with people whose company we enjoy!  It is not easy for us to be humble especially in front of others!  But we are told; “if we humble ourselves we will be exalted and if we exalt ourselves we will be humbled”.

Jesus presents a second parable: when the host gives a dinner he must also be ready to invite those who cannot repay him.  Repayment will be made in the resurrection of the just.

This meal presents table sharing and fellowship in the Kingdom of God.  The poor will share this banquet as well as ourselves.

What we see as contradiction makes perfect sense to God!

Jesus meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto yours.

People judge you by your actions, not your intentions.  You may have a heart of gold, but so does a hard boiled egg!

GOODBYE FR PADRAIG

Fr Padraig Corcoran will be leaving us in the coming week to take up his new appointment as Curate in Mullingar.  I take this opportunity to thank him sincerely for his work here over the past three years.  In particular I thank him for his excellent work with the young people of the parish with whom he had a great relationship.  As a colleague, Padraig was most pleasant company and worked well as a member of our Parish Team.  I am sorry that the Bishop needed him for another assignment in the diocese and we will miss him from here.  I wish Padraig every success and continued happiness in his work in Mullingar.

- Sean Heaney PP

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

Luke 14:7-14

1 The parable brings out two contrasting experiences, but each in its own way can be a moment of grace, a moment of truth, a moment of growth. You may be able to recall such experiences in your life. In the first (verses 8,9) we discover that we had claimed a place that is too high for us; we are not as selfless, generous or compassionate as we thought we were. In the second (v. 10) when others point out a goodness in ourselves that we may not have acknowledged to ourselves. How have you grown through such experiences?

2 In verses 12-14 Jesus warns us against the danger of ulterior motives in doing good. We can do good things partly because of the benefit we will get from what we do. That is natural but can lead to disappointment and resentment when our expectations are not met. When the good deed in itself is our reward we have a greater freedom. Feedback will be a bonus but is not necessary.
