WHO’S IN, WHO’S OUT?

People who frequent clubs, etc, know about “door policy”.  Luke tells today about the door policy of the Kingdom of God - there is no automatic entry.  When asked about how many would be saved, Jesus didn’t do the arithmetic of salvation but gave advice about how to act in the present time - “try your best to enter by the narrow door because many will try to enter and will not succeed”.  The door is not so wide that anyone can just amble through at any time - the door is narrow and we must work now to enter in.

And the door does not stay open indefinitely.  If we miss our opportunities, we won’t get in.  The pain of being excluded will be made worse when we see the kind of people who have been admitted.  They will come from all over - “from east and west, from north and south” and will take their places at the feast in the Kingdom.  The prophecy of Isaiah in the first reading is seen to be fulfilled as “people of all nations” enjoy the favour of the Lord.  All sorts!

The door policy of the Kingdom of God keeps surprising us - there is no sure way of knowing who’s in or who’s out.  In the Kingdom of God we cannot even begin to “guess who’s coming to dinner”.

“Ignore people who belittle you; They’re only trying to cut you down to their size”

CLONMINCH CEMETERY DAY

Mass and blessing of graves takes place this evening at 6.00pm in Clonminch.  We remember the recently deceased and those long dead - those who shared our childhood years, those who were our companions and friends during our adult years, those who shared our faith, our hopes for the future; those who gave us love and received our own; our relatives, friends, neighbours and those who have no one to pray for them.  As we share these memories we know that part of us has gone to eternity and part of them remains with us.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

Luke 13:22-30

1  The question put to Jesus is one that many still ask: ‘Will many be saved?’ In his answer Jesus is not concerned about numbers but warns his listeners about complacency. Just as his listeners could not regard the mere fact of being Jews as sufficient for salvation, neither can we regard being Christians as enough. That entitlement will come from our acceptance of Jesus. For any relationship to be alive – either with God or with another human person – the real question is ‘Is my heart in this relationship?’ What does your experience tell you of this?

2  ‘Strive to enter by the narrow door.’ Jesus himself is on his journey to Jerusalem, purposeful and determined. True followers of him will also be purposeful and determined. That is true in any journey, career, or relationship if there is to be growth or progress. What it is like for you when you fail to do this? What is it like for you when the effort is there?

John Byrne OSA, Intercom July/Aug 2010
