MY SOUL PROCLAIMS THE LORD

In to-day's gospel Mary's spontaneous words of joy clearly reflect the ideals of the Christian life. At the very core of that life is faith. Elizabeth also echoes this reality with the words “blessed is she who believed...”

Despite all the difficulties that she must have encountered, the many doubts and worries that must have entered her mind, Mary's focus was resolute and firmly fixed on the will of God. Her “YES” to the request of the angel Gabriel was the ultimate “Act of Faith”. Because she gave birth to Jesus she made him visible to the world. Mary is our role model. We should look to her in moments of darkness, uncertainty and sadness. She will help us carry our many burdens and sorrows once we open our hearts and minds to her. She will intercede with Jesus on our behalf once we ask her faithfully.

Let us thank God for giving us Mary as we joyfully celebrate her Assumption.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.

“Some complain that God put thorns on roses; others give thanks that God put roses among thorns”

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

Luke 1:39-56

1  The story of the Visitation is a story of two pregnant women reaching out to one another. For those of you who are mothers, perhaps you have been in that situation. What blessings do you recall in such encounters?

2 The story and the song of Mary are both celebrating the work of God in their lives. When have you been particularly grateful for what was happening in your life? How did you express and celebrate your thanks?

3  Mary is praised for believing that God’s promise to her would be fulfilled. How has your trust in God’s promise to be with you helped you in your life?

4  Read the Magnificat a few times slowly and let your attention stay with whatever words or phrase you are drawn to. Place yourself in the position of the one saying the prayer. Let it be your prayer of thanksgiving for your own life.
